CAST IRON OVEN TRAY
To inspire homemade, quality food
Client: Lafont Cast Iron, Argentina
Disciplines: Industrial Design, Product Design, Cast Iron Manufacturing
THE CHALLENGE
The Argentinian cuisine features a variety of meat and vegetarian dishes cooked at low temperatures for long times. Argentinian restaurants and families prepare these meals both in the oven and on grills.
Our challenge was to design and manufacture a cast iron tray that can be used indistinctly at any range of temperatures and that is extremely durable. The target customers are both families and restaurants.
THE DESIGN PROCESS
This piece is inspired by the combination of the “Argentinian pleasure” of cooking meat and the simple Scandinavian lines. The objective was to come up with a product which could be presented on any table, from the homey Sunday night to the formal dinner.
From a manufacturing perspective, the product required the implementation of several innovations, which helped maintaining the product to the highest quality, limiting investment costs, and minimizing the environmental impact during production.
THE OUTCOME
The cast iron oven tray has been part of the line of products sold by Lafont in its boutiques and online for multiple years. The pieces are all manufactured at the Lafont factory, which employs dozens of skilled workers and technicians just outside Buenos Aires, Argentina. The tray is sold in great numbers to both families and restaurants, making it a key piece of Lafont collection.
